An update on the survey, the revamp and the forums

Scott's back again to answer some of the questions we've have been receiving, and also a couple we have just made up but, hopefully, tackle issues that need addressing.

I got sent a survey, are you actually going to do anything with it?
Absolutely. Everyone on our database was sent a link to our survey. Half were sent a link to questions about authonomy as it is now, half were sent questions about the authonomy of the future. We have had a very good response and they fall pretty much 50/50 in terms of which survey was answered. This will prove very useful indeed as we progress with our revamp.

And how is that revamp going?
We are now in discussions with developers who will be coming back with ideas and pitches very soon. We will discuss the results of the survey with them and see who comes up with the best ideas and solutions.

Scott, why aren’t you on the forums all that much any more? You should hear what they are saying about you on there.
Because that way madness lies.

Also, it quickly became apparent that it was a highly inefficient way for me to communicate with authonomy members. I would post something and half an hour later there’d be pages of replies and it was impossible to keep track and/or reply to everyone. So I stopped.

I do realise that this gave the impression that I wasn’t interested in engaging with the authonomy community and that was a mistake, for which I apologise. I have, I am pretty sure, replied to every question that was sent to me via my profile page but I could, and should, have done more elsewhere. I don’t think the forums are the right place though so will post as regularly as I can here on the blog.

You used to post reviews of books but don’t do that as much now, why not?
Once the authonomy editorial board settled into place last year they were doing such a good job of picking out one to watch and books of note that I was able to grab titles from their shortlists and feedback to the board. However, I did miss the immediate nature of direct reviews so I am back doing them now. Watch out for me, I could pop up anywhere!

The forum issue is exactly why I prefer the software that has the little icon that takes you directly to the last place that you left off when reading each thread. Currently you give up on threads because you get overwhelmed trying to find your last place and read through everything else. With that simple icon, you always know you can just click it and go directly to your last stopping point.

I'm glad you recognize that you've had some false starts. Seems to us that this sort of situation requires a unique blend of skills to make it work. No sin in learning on the job when the job is such an odd one.

Also glad you are actually getting professional ideas about the improvements. To me, the most important areas are 1) navigational ease and 2) transparent fairness of rankings if you choose to continue them.

I've given you lots of practice in trying to prevent unwanted accounts from interfering with the process, and I hope you finally find a way to do that.
