And what’s more, it will be a competition with prizes awarded in the following categories:
- Best novel
- Best science fiction or technology-related novel
- Best humorous or satirical novel
- Best sex scene
We thought it was a great and fun idea and wanted to let you know about it. What’s more, we will be offering the overall winning book a publishing deal with HarperCollins, with an ebook to be published as soon as possible after the announcement.
You need to sign up to enter and all the details on how to do that can be found here:

The 3-Day Novel Contest has been around for awhile, held every Labor Day weekend. Granted, it's a bit more than 30 hours, but it's basically the same idea and not at all original.
I can't imagine Harper Collins publishing a novel that's only been written in three days. Perhaps they'd be better off perusing through the wealth of talent which already exists here on Authonomy. Just sounds like another slap in the face to everyone who's put far more time and effort into crafting their fiction. What a joke!
Is HarperCollins offering a book publishing prize on the winning novel manuscript or any other manuscript that the winning writer might have or might be convinced to write? So much has been left to interpretation of the words used thatit can truly be an iffy deal, if you know what I mean.
Perhaps the publishers would like to suggest changes, modifications or additions to the winning manuscript before awarding the publishing contract?
Oh, I thought one could do it online too. Too bad, those living in other parts of the world would not be able to take part in this fun-filled, although tough (I'm sure) competition.
Great to see this project... you might like to also know that it has been done twice before in London, the last one taking place over in 24 hours, with a complete, edited book that was literally written, edited and published in 24 hours, across 4 continents. More details here
I could do that with both hands tied behind my back while typing with my nose! lol! But my issue with this event is what would keep someone from cheating? They already announced it in advance; so what's to stop someone from starting early? I WAS interested until that thought crossed my mind.
It would be too easy to cheat on this - not to mention HC is cheating all authors who sweat and cry over books for months (and sometimes years)until they are perfect.
You can't write a quality novel in 30 hours. You might have a great story line, believable characters and a dynamic plot, but chances are all the bits in between will be crap.
Welcome to 50 Shades of Grey style publishing. This is the most ridiculous "prize" I've ever read about.
Why not offer to publish a NaNoWriMo novel, or create a meaningful competition here, on Autho?
It's a good way to jumpstart a novella. So I'm signing up. However, I have no interest in submitting my manuscript to a contest. I'll use the time to jumpstart my novella, and then, rewrite, rewrite, rewrite, edit, edit, edit.

Here's what some of us think
can we have a prize for novels that take 30 hours to read.
It is good when one can take months even years to perfect a piece, yet a brilliant piece done in only 24 is not less brilliant. Sometimes the finality of time can cause some to rise to the occasion. All in all if it encourages more writers to write and seeks to reward the efforts I encourage it. I actually love the concept. You do not always have 20 years in life.
I LOVE this idea. I've signed up and was just invited to the Kernel offices, but I can't go :(
Really excited to get going with it- just the small matter of deciding what I'm going to write!
I loved the idea of a remote "fellowship of writers". A bunch of crazy writers, passionate about their craft, all running a literary marathon togther. Anything that encourages writers to sit down, dig deep, and see what they're capable of, is worthwhile. Regardless of the publish-ability of the final product, that kind of a challenge is its own reward.
Having competed in the competition at the kernel offices I found the experience to be exhausting but rewarding. I began and finished a novella within the thirty hour time allowance.
I am proud of my achievement and would love to have the book published in fact I will be very happy for anyone who has something published as a result of this.
Without doubt my novella will have mistakes within it, I wrote 25000 words without notes and with very little sleep so I think that is reasonable.
I would imagine that the people who have left negative comments on this forum would be happy to see any writer get published regardless of of how or why. Surely you, as potential authors, should be encouraging other writers rather than blindly dismissing the project in it's entirety.
Shame on you.
I also joined the many writers slogging it out on my computer for hours and hours at a time, writing a novel in 30 hours.
by the time I´d finished my hands were stiff and my back ached something chronic. But you know what? I did it. Even if my book isn't chosen, I intend to publish it.
And for those who don´t approve. I have recently published a book that took me nearly two years to write. But with a little spit and polish, I reckon my 30 Hour book could be a winner.
